HBO Max Adding Podcasts in Europe to Serve up “Immersive Fandom”

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the expansion of its podcasting strategy to Europe, integrating audio content directly into the HBO Max streaming platform. This move follows a similar rollout in the United States that began in 2019 and aligns with broader industry trends as competitors like Netflix and Paramount+ also increase their audio offerings. By providing companion content for major franchises, the streamer aims to deepen subscriber engagement through immersive fandom and behind-the-scenes access.

The European launch begins with Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast, hosted by film critic Rhianna Dhillon. The show features a rewatch of the eight films in the franchise, including special guests and deep-dive discussions. While the video version of the podcast is exclusive to the HBO Max platform, the audio version will be distributed across major third-party platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify, to maximize reach.

Starting in June, the streamer will expand its European slate with a heavy focus on the Game of Thrones universe. Upcoming titles include The Game of Thrones Anniversary Special Podcast, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Podcast, and a new season of The Game of Thrones Podcast: House of the Dragon to coincide with the show's third season. This strategy leverages high-value IP to create franchise-led audio content that serves as a companion to flagship video programming.

Beyond fantasy franchises, HBO Max plans to offer in-depth discussions and companion podcasts for a variety of popular series, including The Last of Us, The Pitt, The Comeback, and Sinners: In Proximity. The slate also includes the multi-season rewatch series The History of Curb Your Enthusiasm. This expansion reflects a growing trend among global streaming giants to utilize podcasts as a tool for retention and brand immersion, positioning the platform as a comprehensive destination for creator-led conversations.
