PIDA 2026: Industry Packaging Professional Award Recognizes Kilpatrick

The Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) has recognized Kilpatrick as the Industry Packaging Professional for 2026, honoring more than two decades of leadership in the sector. As the founder of Zipform Packaging, Kilpatrick was cited for a long-standing commitment to replacing plastic with sustainable, paper-based alternatives and pioneering linear-formed fibre technology. This recognition highlights the industry's ongoing transition toward circular economy solutions and the importance of technical leadership in developing next-generation packaging formats.

Kilpatrick began his packaging career in 2002 and later established SOTA Packaging, now known as Zipform Packaging, in 2010. His primary vision was to innovate paper-based alternatives to traditional plastic packaging, a goal he pursued well before sustainability became a central industry focus. Kilpatrick is credited with introducing linear-formed fibre technology to the Australian market and pioneering the development of paper-bottomed packaging solutions.

Beyond commercial success, the PIDA judges highlighted Kilpatrick’s extensive contributions to industry standards and collaborative initiatives. He has been a key participant in Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) working groups and technical presentations. Notably, his involvement in the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP)-led Save Food Packaging Design Guidelines project has had a global impact, as these guidelines were subsequently adopted internationally by the World Packaging Organisation.

Kilpatrick’s current work focuses on the development of highly sustainable next-generation fibre packaging. This includes a paper bottle composed of more than 95 per cent fibre and over 60 per cent post-consumer recycled content. Additionally, he is overseeing world-first trials for a dry-moulded fibre meat tray, continuing his trajectory of pushing technical boundaries in the Australasian packaging industry.

The Industry Packaging Professional award is a prestigious recognition reserved for individuals who have demonstrated a sustained and significant contribution to the Australasian packaging industry for at least 20 years. By honoring Kilpatrick, the industry acknowledges the critical role of technical expertise and long-term vision in transitioning the market toward more sustainable and recyclable materials.
