California’s instant EV rebates are now available for these three brands

California has launched the MyFirstEV incentive program, providing first-time electric vehicle buyers with instant rebates of up to $3,500 for new cars and $1,750 for used models. The initiative, which initially covers Tesla, Hyundai, and Lucid, is supported by $135 million in state funding matched by participating automakers. This program aims to stimulate the state's EV market and help reach environmental goals following the removal of federal tax credits.

Governor Gavin Newsom finalized the MyFirstEV program in the state budget, allocating $135 million to provide immediate discounts at the point of sale. Participating automakers are required to match these state funds, effectively doubling the impact of the incentives. While the program currently supports Tesla, Hyundai, and Lucid, a wider rollout is expected soon. Ford, Rivian, Chevrolet, and Kia are scheduled to join later this month, followed by Toyota, Honda, and Subaru in September, and Mitsubishi in November. Nissan and Volvo are also in the process of determining their participation timelines.

The program targets first-time EV buyers and excludes plug-in hybrids. Standard eligibility requires new vehicles to have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $50,000 or less, while used vehicles must be priced at $25,000 or less. However, a specific legislative exception allows buyers of vehicles from California-headquartered companies to claim the rebate regardless of the purchase price. This provision benefits brands like Tesla and Lucid, and is intended to support local economic competition and the state's position as a leader in the EV industry.

This state-level intervention comes roughly a year after the elimination of the $7,500 federal tax incentive, a move that contributed to a slowdown in the EV market as major automakers scaled back their electric offerings. Newsom stated that the rebates are intended to provide residents with a head start and a choice, while simultaneously investing in the state's future and air quality goals. To access the funds, eligible buyers must complete an online attestation form during the purchasing process. Vehicles purchased before a specific manufacturer officially launches its incentive program are not eligible for the retroactive discount.
