The global podcast audience is expected to grow to 619.2 million listeners in 2026, with further expansion to 651.7 million projected for 2027. While the number of listeners continues to rise, the market is showing signs of maturation as early adoption rates begin to slow. This growth reflects the increasing integration of podcasting into the daily media consumption habits of hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

As of early 2026, there are more than 4.69 million indexed podcasts, though a significant portion is considered inactive. Only about 450,000 to 500,000 podcasts are actively producing content, with over 4 million "podfade" shows having ceased production due to burnout or lack of resources. Between November 2025 and March 2026 alone, the number of indexed podcasts grew by 120,000.

In the United States, podcast consumption is particularly strong, with an estimated 210 million Americans aged 12 and older identifying as listeners. This represents an increase of 18 million consumers since 2025. The data suggests that while content creation has fluctuated, the listener base remains on a steady upward trajectory.
