Colorado RTD Increases Rail Capacity for Fourth of July Weekend Events in Denver

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Colorado is expanding its service capacity to accommodate high ridership during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The agency is adding extra rail cars to several light rail and commuter rail lines to support travelers attending major events, including Colorado Rockies games and high-profile concerts. This strategic increase in service aims to mitigate traffic congestion in downtown Denver while providing a safe alternative to driving for holiday celebrants.

To manage the influx of visitors for holiday festivities, RTD is enhancing its rail service on the C, E, W, and N lines. Specifically, the agency will add extra rail cars on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, to meet the demand generated by fireworks displays at Coors Field and a major Ed Sheeran concert at Empower Field at Mile High. These lines provide critical connections to key transit hubs and venues, including Auraria West, Ball Arena, and Union Station, while the A, B, G, and N lines continue to facilitate access to the downtown core.

In addition to rail enhancements, RTD is highlighting its bus network as a viable solution for event-goers. Several local bus routes, including Routes 1, 15L, and 16, as well as Routes 30 and 31 along Federal Boulevard, will serve the vicinity of Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. Pauline Haberman, RTD’s Project Manager of Special Projects, emphasized that transit is the preferred option for those planning to consume alcohol during the celebrations, noting that driving is not a safe choice for holiday revelers.

To streamline the passenger experience, the agency is encouraging the use of the RTD Next Ride app, which allows users to input destination venues like Ball Arena or Empower Field to receive automated trip planning. This digital integration is part of a broader effort to reduce traffic backups in downtown Denver during a weekend featuring multiple drone shows, concerts, and fireworks. By scaling up capacity and promoting mobile tools, RTD aims to maintain operational efficiency across its multi-modal network during one of the year's busiest travel periods.
