FirstNet, AT&T Launch Dedicated 5G SA Core Built for Public Safety Communications

FirstNet and AT&T have introduced a nationwide 5G standalone (5G SA) network core specifically engineered for the unique operational requirements of first responders. This dedicated infrastructure is physically separate from AT&T’s commercial core, providing enhanced security, reliability, and operational control for public safety agencies. The launch is a significant milestone for the sector as it establishes a foundation for advanced applications like mission-critical communications and real-time video streaming.

The new FirstNet 5G SA core functions as the central brain and nervous system of the network, utilizing multiple geographically distributed sites to ensure redundancy and resilience. By isolating public safety traffic from commercial users, the architecture supports faster upload speeds and improved responsiveness for the connected technologies that responders use daily. This dedicated approach allows for public safety-grade security measures that exceed standard commercial protections, including 24/7 monitoring by a specialized security operations center and access restricted to FirstNet SIM cards to protect subscriber data from potential attackers.

A key innovation enabled by this infrastructure is the upcoming rollout of Adaptive Mission Performance. This capability will allow the network to be customized for specific connectivity needs rather than relying on a standard network slice, optimizing performance for high-bandwidth tools such as body-worn cameras and situational awareness platforms. AT&T designed the core based on direct feedback from the public safety community to ensure the technology evolves alongside their mission-critical requirements, addressing the inadequacy of one-size-fits-all connectivity.

FirstNet subscribers have already begun the transition to the new 5G SA core at no additional cost. As the migration continues, AT&T plans to incrementally introduce the Adaptive Mission Performance features to further enhance network responsiveness.
