Newcastle Airport and Hunter Pet Motel are reporting a significant rise in demand for their integrated pet boarding and transport services. The partnership, which features a dedicated Pet Transit Lounge at the terminal, caters to the growing number of regional travelers seeking convenient care for their animals while flying. Since its inception in 2023, the Pet Transit Lounge at Newcastle Airport has streamlined the travel process for pet owners by allowing them to drop off cats and dogs directly outside the terminal. Following drop-off, animals are transported in specialized vehicles to the Hunter Pet Motel facility located in Elderslie. This service model addresses a critical pain point for travelers, combining the logistics of air travel with high-quality animal boarding.

The Hunter Pet Motel distinguishes itself through a premium care model that avoids co-boarding, providing each dog with a private room and backyard, while cats receive individual accommodations. The facility also offers luxury amenities such as supervised play sessions, an on-site swimming pool, and digital photo updates for owners via email or text. According to owner Charmaine Smith, the growth of the airport’s domestic and international connectivity is directly fueling expansion opportunities for pet-related businesses throughout the Hunter region.

Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton noted that rising passenger numbers are driving the need for these ancillary services, as more travelers prefer the convenience of local departures over driving to distant airports. To further incentivize use, the motel provides specialized pricing for defense personnel and long-term stays, alongside value-added services like complimentary washes and toys. This collaboration serves as a successful case study in how the pet industry can leverage regional infrastructure developments to capture a larger share of the travel market.
