ABP Southampton Welcomes Europe’s Tallest Quay Cranes at DP World Terminal

Associated British Ports has successfully overseen the arrival of Europe’s tallest quay cranes at DP World’s container terminal in the Port of Southampton. This infrastructure upgrade is intended to enhance the port's capability as a premier global gateway for UK trade by improving vessel turnaround times and cargo handling efficiency. The arrival of these massive units underscores the port's strategic importance in managing high-volume international trade flows and supporting the resilience of the UK's maritime supply chain.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has facilitated the delivery of new, record-breaking quay cranes to the DP World container terminal at the Port of Southampton, a move that significantly boosts the facility's handling capacity. These cranes are the tallest in Europe and required an intricate marine operation to safely enter the port. Because the cranes extended more than 160 meters in width across the transport vessel, the ABP Southampton Marine team coordinated a strictly controlled transit involving dedicated pilotage, tug support, and vessel escorts. The delivery was scheduled during a specific early morning window to minimize disruption to other port traffic and ensure the vessel could be safely maneuvered alongside the terminal.

Steve Masters, Harbour Master for ABP Southampton, highlighted the meticulous planning and expertise required to navigate such a complex operation through a busy working port. He noted that the successful arrival demonstrates ABP’s strength in managing challenging vessel movements and enabling major capital investments. The Port of Southampton is a critical deep-sea hub for the UK, with its container terminal—operated by DP World—handling approximately 2 million containers annually. This facility connects British markets to every continent, making it one of the top three global container terminals in the country.

The addition of these next-generation cranes is expected to drive operational excellence by facilitating faster turnaround times for the largest vessels currently in operation. Southampton’s strategic location, characterized by deep-water access and robust inland road and rail links, reinforces its status as the UK’s primary hub for deep-sea trade.
