BMW i3 50 xDrive Orders Open Months Ahead of Schedule

BMW has accelerated its electric vehicle strategy by opening orders for the i3 50 xDrive First Edition months earlier than originally planned in key European markets. Driven by high consumer interest in Germany and the United Kingdom, the move signals robust demand for the automaker's next-generation electric sedans. This early launch underscores the competitive pressure on legacy manufacturers to secure market share as they transition to all-electric lineups.

BMW officially opened order books this week for the i3 50 xDrive First Edition in the UK and Germany, moving up a timeline that was previously set for autumn. In the UK, the model is priced starting at £57,905, while German buyers will see a starting price of €75,340. Despite the early ordering window, BMW confirmed that the production schedule remains fixed, with assembly slated to begin at the Munich plant this August and initial deliveries expected in the autumn. The vehicle is not expected to reach the United States market until 2027.

The performance specifications for the new sedan highlight BMW's focus on high-output electric drivetrains. The i3 50 xDrive features dual electric motors generating 469 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.7 seconds. The vehicle utilizes an electronic all-wheel-drive system to manage traction and is powered by a substantial 108.7 kilowatt-hour battery pack. For the European market, the car offers a WLTP-rated range of up to 567 miles, while the upcoming US version is targeting a preliminary EPA range of 440 miles.

Technical innovations in the i3 50 xDrive include an 800-volt architecture designed for ultra-fast charging. When using a 400-kilowatt charger, the vehicle can reportedly add 250 miles of range in just ten minutes, a figure that outperforms many current luxury electric competitors. Additionally, the sedan will support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for powering external devices. This launch places BMW in direct competition with other new premium entries like the Mercedes-Benz VLE luxury van and the BYD Da Tang EV SUV, illustrating how legacy automakers are pivoting to meet the demands of a competitive electric vehicle market. When the model eventually arrives in the US, it will be equipped with a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for adapter-free access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
