Ford Gives First Official Look at Its Upcoming $30,000 Electric Truck in New Videos

Ford has launched a dedicated website featuring the first official prototype footage of its highly anticipated $30,000 electric pickup truck, which is scheduled for a 2027 release. The vehicle will be the inaugural model on Ford’s new Universal EV platform, designed to streamline manufacturing and significantly reduce production costs for affordable electric vehicles. This development marks a critical milestone for the EV sector as legacy automakers pivot toward high-volume, low-cost models to drive mass-market adoption.

Ford’s new website showcases the development of its affordable electric truck through three short videos, providing a glimpse of a prototype characterized by an aerodynamic shape and a boxy silhouette. The vehicle is expected to be the first of several models built on the Universal EV platform, a strategic initiative aimed at lowering costs by minimizing part counts and simplifying the assembly process. Alan Clarke, Ford’s vice president of advanced development projects, stated that the project is focused on reimagining how we develop and build vehicles to achieve greater efficiency across various body styles.

Internally referred to as a unicorn project, the truck’s development has reached a stage where prototypes are being assembled at a facility nicknamed the Chapel of Love. Production team member Mark Gentry noted that the prototype's assembly has been exceptionally smooth, aligning with Ford's stated goals for manufacturing simplicity. While the prototype remains camouflaged, visual details suggest a footprint similar to the Ford Maverick but with a shorter hood and taller bedsides. The design avoids the bulging fenders of larger trucks like the F-150 Raptor, maintaining a more compact and functional aesthetic.

Performance testing is already underway, with footage showing the electric truck navigating snowy conditions in Northern Michigan. Chris Kirkland, a senior vehicle software specialist, confirmed that the team is currently evaluating stability control, traction control, and electronic power-assisted steering capabilities. This testing phase is a vital step toward the truck's planned 2027 market debut. By targeting a $30,000 price point, Ford aims to address a significant gap in the current EV market, positioning this game-changing project as a cornerstone of its future electric lineup.
