Several New York City buildings evacuated as officials warn of collapse after construction workers find buckling beams

Several buildings in Midtown Manhattan were evacuated on Tuesday morning after construction workers discovered structural failures at a high-rise conversion project located at 235 East 42nd Street. The incident involved buckling support beams on the 21st and 22nd floors, leading to concerns about a potential partial collapse of the upper levels. This event highlights the significant safety risks and engineering challenges associated with large-scale adaptive reuse projects in dense urban environments.

Construction workers at the former Pfizer headquarters in Midtown Manhattan initiated a self-evacuation around 8 a.m. after discovering buckling structural support beams on the 21st and 22nd floors. According to the New York Police Department, the structural stress caused floors 21 through 26 of the 38-story building to begin caving. In response, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and Department of Buildings (DOB) ordered the evacuation of several surrounding structures, including the Hampton Inn Manhattan Grand Central at 231 East 43rd Street.

The site at 235 East 42nd Street is currently the largest office-to-apartment conversion project in New York City's history. Upon completion, the redeveloped high-rise is expected to house 1,600 residential units, including more than 400 designated as affordable housing. The transition from commercial office space to residential use involves complex structural modifications, and this incident underscores the critical importance of monitoring load-bearing elements during such intensive renovations.

Local authorities have implemented significant traffic and pedestrian restrictions, closing East 42nd Street and East 44th Street between Second and Third avenues to ensure public safety. While no injuries have been reported and all site workers are accounted for, DOB inspectors and engineers remain on-site to assess the stability of the structure and secure the surrounding area.
