Waste Management Opens Denver East Recycling Campus in Aurora

Waste Management has officially inaugurated its Denver East sustainability campus in Aurora, Colorado, marking a significant expansion of the region's recycling infrastructure. The facility's opening is timed to support the state's rollout of a new statewide producer responsibility program for paper and packaging. This development is a key part of Colorado's strategy to increase recycling access, reduce waste, and meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals through enhanced circular economy initiatives.

Waste Management (WM) opened the Denver East sustainability campus on Thursday, a project that follows a 2024 groundbreaking attended by Governor Jared Polis. The new facility is designed to significantly increase recycling capacity for Colorado residents and serves as a critical infrastructure component for the state's waste reduction efforts. Governor Polis, who returned for the opening, stated that the campus is a major step forward as the state transitions to an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) model for packaging and paper products.

The campus supports the mandates of House Bill 22-1355, which established the EPR program to provide free, statewide recycling services. This legislative framework shifts the responsibility for managing end-of-life paper and packaging to the producers. Additionally, the Colorado Circular Communities Enterprise, formed under House Bill 24-1449, has awarded 63 grants since 2025 to help schools, businesses, and local communities expand their recycling capabilities and support circular-economy initiatives.

WM officials highlighted that the Denver East campus is expected to expand recycling access while directly supporting the state's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This opening coincides with the Colorado Energy Office's release of its final greenhouse gas report, which outlines the state's progress toward its environmental targets. By providing modern infrastructure to process recyclable materials, the facility helps bridge the gap between increased collection efforts and the state's long-term sustainability objectives.
