Music industry introduces labels for AI-generated songs

A coalition of major music industry organizations has launched a voluntary labeling system designed to distinguish between AI-generated and AI-assisted musical content. This initiative aims to provide listeners with greater transparency regarding the role of technology in the creative process while safeguarding human authorship and artistic intent. By establishing these standards, the sector seeks to address the massive influx of synthetic content on streaming platforms and create a framework for better platform governance.

A broad group of influential industry bodies, including the RIAA, IFPI, the Recording Academy, SAG-AFTRA, IMPALA, WIN, A2IM, and the Human Artistry Campaign, has announced a new voluntary initiative to categorize music involving artificial intelligence. The system establishes two primary labels: 'AI-generated' and 'AI-assisted.' The 'AI-generated' designation applies to recordings where nearly all creative elements, such as lead vocals or instrumental performances, are produced by AI or generated from prompts. Conversely, the 'AI-assisted' label is intended for tracks where humans remain the primary creators but utilize AI for specific expressive elements.

This move serves as a strategic response to the significant rise in AI-produced content and low-quality uploads currently impacting streaming services. Data from Deezer indicates that AI-generated tracks made up 44% of all new music uploaded to its platform daily as of April. Additionally, the industry is grappling with a surge in fraudulent and unauthorized content, evidenced by Spotify's reported removal of approximately 75 million spam tracks in 2025. Industry leaders state that the goal of these labels is to empower fans with clear information about how their music is produced while protecting the integrity of human creativity.

By introducing these labels, the music industry is attempting to build a transparent ecosystem without waiting for formal government intervention or regulation. Clear categorization is expected to help listeners differentiate between fully synthetic works and human-led projects that use AI as a tool.
