RAC Connected: Data-Led Driver Coaching Could Cut Fleet Fuel Costs

The RAC reports that commercial fleets can achieve immediate fuel savings of up to 15% by utilizing telematics data to engage drivers and correct inefficient habits. With diesel prices at 170.01p per litre, fuel remains a primary operating expense, prompting the RAC to advocate for behavioral changes over costly fleet renewals. Analysis indicates that excessive engine idling, harsh acceleration, sudden braking, and poor route planning are major contributors to unnecessary fuel consumption. While these actions may seem minor individually, their cumulative effect across a large fleet results in substantial financial losses.

To facilitate these improvements, the RAC Connected platform, powered by CalAmp technology, provides fleet managers with real-time insights that go beyond basic vehicle tracking. This system allows for targeted coaching and constructive feedback, enabling drivers to adopt more efficient habits. The RAC has already implemented this strategy within its own nationwide patrol fleet, reporting measurable reductions in fuel use, improved vehicle utilization, and enhanced safety.
