UNDP Opens Applications for timbuktoo EdTech Hub to Support African Education Technology Startups

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a call for applications for its timbuktoo EdTech Hub, an initiative designed to accelerate African startups specializing in digital education and skills development. Based in Dakar, Senegal, the program aims to address the educational needs of over 100 million young people across the continent by fostering scalable, technology-driven solutions. By providing mentorship and investment readiness support, the initiative seeks to transform Africa's education systems and position the continent as a global leader in EdTech innovation.

Based in Dakar, Senegal, the timbuktoo EdTech Hub serves as a pan-African center dedicated to strengthening the continent’s education technology ecosystem. The hub is part of the UNDP’s flagship timbuktoo initiative, which focuses on priority sectors with high economic and development potential to position Africa as a global innovation leader. Selected startups will enter the timbuktoo Launchpad, where they will receive a comprehensive support package including a structured incubation program delivered by leading African incubators, mentorship from industry specialists, and access to a continent-wide network of innovation partners.

The initiative targets critical gaps in African education, where millions of students require inclusive, high-quality learning tools tailored to local realities. Beyond supporting individual businesses, the hub aims to promote the institutional adoption of EdTech products by public institutions and generate rigorous evidence regarding the impact of digital learning solutions. By focusing on vocational training technologies and skills development tools, the program intends to contribute to the long-term, sustainable transformation of educational infrastructure across Africa.

To qualify for the program, startups must offer a digital solution focused on education or training, possess a prototype ready for testing or deployment, and have a dedicated team available for the incubation period. The UNDP has placed a strategic emphasis on designing accessible technologies that improve inclusion for underserved populations, ensuring that innovation leads to equitable access.
