Maharashtra Partners with JioBLAST to Boost Gaming, Esports and Digital Innovation

The Government of Maharashtra has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with JioBLAST to accelerate the state's gaming, esports, and digital innovation ecosystem. This non-binding agreement establishes a framework for long-term collaboration across skill development, academic partnerships, and investment promotion to engage the region's youth. The partnership aims to position Maharashtra as a leading destination for the global gaming industry while fostering a supportive environment for startups and technology-led entrepreneurship.

The collaboration between the Maharashtra government and JioBLAST focuses on creating a comprehensive infrastructure for gaming and esports development through industry, education, and youth engagement. According to P. Anbalagan, the state’s principal secretary of industries, these sectors are vital drivers of innovation, and the MoU seeks to encourage industry participation through ecosystem-building initiatives. The agreement covers a wide range of areas, including startup support, skill development, and the promotion of industry events to attract further investment into the state.

The first major milestone of this partnership is the "India Rising: Road to EWC" event, which is designed to connect Indian creators and gamers with the global Esports World Cup 2026 ecosystem. JioBLAST CEO Charlie Cowdrey noted that the initiative will establish Mumbai as the first physical home of the Esports World Cup in India, leveraging the state's existing talent and infrastructure. The event is scheduled to culminate on July 4 in Mumbai, featuring a high-profile Chess LAN Final between Indian grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi and Dutch grandmaster Benjamin Bok for a spot in the 2026 world competition.

Beyond competitive chess, the "India Rising" event will host tournaments for popular titles such as VALORANT and MOBA Legends: 5v5!, alongside creator showcases and community activities. While the current MoU is non-binding and requires separate approvals for specific funding or projects, it provides a strategic roadmap for future digital innovation. By aligning with JioBLAST, the Maharashtra government signals a broader commitment to becoming a central hub for the next generation of technology-driven entertainment and esports in India.
